Thermal Imaging | What, When and How? Guide 2022

In this Thermal Imaging Guide for 2022, we will be going over the basics of what Thermal Imaging is and when you might need to when completing your next EICR. It also goes over if it is a legal requirement or not as well as how it might be able to save you time and money on your next EICR as well. Thermal Imaging

What is Thermal Imaging?

Thermal Imaging is the use of video and infrared radiation to show heat within a specific area. This allows you to see the disparity in temperature between areas, giving you an idea of the operating temperature of the object and if they are in their standard range of operation. Here are some basic images of what you would see through a thermal camera to give you an understanding of how it works: Thermal Imaging

When might you need Thermal Imaging?

The use of thermal imaging within the Electrical Safety Testing industry allows a qualified tester to identify any unusual heat spots within the wiring for the building. You might need a thermal imaging survey when there are some unidentified issues with some of your circuits that a normal fixed wire test would not solve. Getting one completed alongside your EICR could also save you some time and money when it comes to remedials, as it allows for a much smoother and quick understanding of what might be the issue.  Thermal Imaging

In most of our use cases, you can usually see these heat spots attached to the circuit board, as it is where the electrical current terminates from its own circuit. This allows the user to complete an enhanced thermographic survey to give the best understanding of the problem.

How often would you need to do a Thermal Imaging test?

If you wanted testing completed every year, then it usually would go alongside Fixed Wire Testing as it is part of examining the wires and circuits within the building. It also just allowed you the peace of mind of knowing that everything within the area is running within the regulation temperature and working as it should.

Is Thermal Imaging a Legal Requirement alongside EICR?

As thermal imaging is not a legal requirement, it means that it doesn’t have to be completed on an annual basis, but you could still need to have testing completed if your insurance requires one.
